Movie Review : Orphan

Yeah, I've been watching a lot of movies lately. :p

I wasn't sure what to expect of this movie at first. I saw advertisements for it while I was in NYC and then :iconapplejuice-ofpan: told me she watched it so I got it on Netflix. Good...god, this movie...just...god...

Overall rating: :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

God...I'm still speechless. XD Strongest points of the movie: storyline and characters. The story was extremely intriguing and it caught my interest right from the start. When it started playing, I was hooked. Your questions are answered about 2/3 of the way through and then the rest is just super intense. I was actually shaking. :p It's unique, it's intriguing, and I felt complete when the credits started rolling. Nothing was left out.

Then the characters were so genuine. I really felt for the mom the most, and Max. The characters had great personalities, really consistent and animate, although it took a while for Esther to liven up. I found myself furious with the whole group when they started ganging up on the mom halfway through. :x And although Esther's the bad guy, she was adorable for a time and I loved her accent.

Some favorite parts of the movie. SPOILERS! I really loved the concept of the black lights and especially when she painted the huge portraits of the couples making love. That took me by surprise but it was a great concept nonetheless. When the mom faced so much opposition from her therapist and her husband even, that was great (although infuriating) because it didn't make the movie a, "Oh! We have a bad person in the house. Let's do all we can to get them out!" Instead of fighting the bad guy, Kate spent the entire time fighting with the family. That was a good refresher from other plots. I also loved the unexpected twist of Esther's genetic disorder. I didn't see that coming at all.END SPOILERS!

The one thing I didn't care for was the random sex scene they had in the first third of the movie. Although it makes sense now that I look back at it, I still thought it was somewhat unnecessary. >_>

Overall, I would highly recommend this movie. It's not scary at all, more action than psychological like I thought it would be. Good to watch alone or with another person. I wouldn't recommend watching it in a group because they'd probably just ruin it. This is a movie that doesn't need the extra commentary. XD I'm very glad I watched it.

Oh yeah, I'd heard about them before. :D They're pretty awesome. I should show you the tarot card deck I bought with my Christmas gift card. The designs kind of remind me of that.
